Although doctors agree breast milk is designed to give an infant the best start in life, it is not always possible or practical to breast feed. Having breast fed or attempted to breast feed with all 5 of my babies, I can tell you that each infant is different and each circumstance needs to be evaluated on its own merits. Each of these experiences had a varying degree of success, ranging from a few short weeks to several months. In one case, the baby just didn't want to nurse-but took to a bottle with a natural shaped nipple. I provided breast milk until it wasn't there any more. Best case scenario was the child I nursed for nearly a year-until he figured out where the milk was kept and began to go after it in some fairly inappropriate settings. For all of them, the initial frustration was well worth it! Cracked nipples, struggling for comfortable positions for mother and baby, needing to feed while away from home, saving milk for times when you are away from the baby. It's all worth it, and no hard feelings when it comes to a close for each child. Now, science tells us that bottle fed babies actually suffer from fewer allergies as they grow older. Surprised? It makes sense, because the new body tests the world and what it can consider to be "self" which it will not react to with allergies later on. Formulas contain many processed and synthetic substances that mother's milk does not-and these are adopted by the body as natural, much less likely to cause problems later on. Our wonderful world is a surprise a minute!
