It seems quaint that underwear was refered to as "unmentionables" not long ago. Now we often see what looks like underwear out in public, on the beach, and worn as tops and shorts around town. Granted, fabrics are more dense than actual underwear-but the construction is the same! I've observed that cultural taboos are often climate related. The more warm a climate is, the skimpier the clothing that is accepted as normal. In any event, underwear needs to be comfortable and give a smooth line under other clothing. Natural fibers like cotton or silk are the most body-friendly. Silk is very strong as well. There must be a lot of busy silkworms somewhere, because silk prices have come down dramatically lately and the number of items available is growing rapidly.
