Inside information: Whether you purchase a ready-to-wear salwar suit from India or have one custom tailored, the kameez tunic will have a very wide side seam reaching from sleeve cuff to the side slit or hem. There may be plenty of room for changing the size as needed, and is done this way because many in India keep their clothing for a lifetime. Some fabric sets are designed with the entire tunic already having inset sleaves and neck shaping. Only the side seams need to be measured and stitched, and the salwar pants made in the desired shape. This one-size pattern is an exact replica of a tailored garment created in Mumbai. All are designed for salwar kameez suits with 2.5 meters each in 3 fabrics (total approximately 7.5 yards/meters): the tunic, often embellished with embroidery or batik, the salwar pants in a complimentary design or contrasting color, and the flowing dupatta shawl designed to match the other two pieces and bring the whole design into focus. Fabric contents range from cotton to silk to synthetics. There are so many uses for these sets, from coordinated skirts and tops with matching shawl to fabulous yoga sets (see our Salwar Outlet for examples).
