There is one key to great singing: Practise, practise, practise! When karaoke was first popular, a wisecraking observer remarked that "Nobody was ever discovered in a karaoke bar" and the ever-growing industry was dubbed "Croakie". It is true that spectacularly bad singers are welcome to take the mike along with folks who have some natural talent. But in the long run most people can learn to master - really master - favorite tunes with diligent practise. It's worth it! Here are some of the best products and books to get you going, and don't let anyone's remarks inhibit the fun. It might be worth listing a few unwritten karaoke courtesy rules here, for the uninitiated. Most venues keep a running list of people who have signed up to sing certain songs during the evening. It's first come, first served to a point. If one singer has a long list of songs he or she wants to do, the dj will rotate singers so everyone has a chance. In most places, if a singer is doing a really bad job everyone else will pick up the song in the background and sing along to show support (and to temper the blow to sensitive ears). It is very bad form, however, to pick up a free mike and jump in over the scheduled performer. It's the spirit of community participation that makes the most fun, and karaoke seems to have replaced campfire gatherings and barn dances in our modern world. Enjoy!
