Dance and performance costuming can take on any role from the backyard antics of a growing 3-year old to the slick professional routines done on Broadway-and everything in between. Perhaps the most joyous costumes are created for medieval Renfaire celebrations and belly dance exhibitions-an activity I have highly enjoyed to replace the desire for ballet lessons which I missed as a child. I've fallen in love with the bright Indian women's clothing that largely replaces the sari throughout that culture. They are originally known as sari suits, since the fabric used for early versions was made of a draped sari. There is just enough fabric in a 5 yard sari for the tunic top and matching pants now known as a salwar kameez. Fabric sets designed for salwar kameez include a dupatta shawl, the flowing shoudler wrap designed ornately to match with the elements of a full sari. Baghra dance and belly dance are both usually costumed using elements of the salwar kameez suit.
