Every couple of years someone comes out with a book or article claiming that paying taxes is voluntary, and that taxpayers are under no real obligation to do so. A lot of folks have ended up in jail or, worse, losing property from following such misbegotten advice. Make no mistake, I'm all for reducing taxes as much as possible. I was in the tax and accounting business for a long time, and had great success in working with the IRS on behalf of clients and in reducing taxes on state and federal forms. However, the only thing "voluntary" about our tax system is that it is up to the inidividual or business to file and pay-no one is going to come knocking on your door come April 15 to collect your taxes. Someone will be sending mail, locking your bank accounts and yes, knocking on your door, if you don't. Don't be fooled by con artists who claim to have a legal way to get out of accounting for business or paying taxes on profits or income. It just isn't real. Here are some great books and resources dealing with taxes.
