Ah, needle arts! Possibly the most relaxing and engrossing way to while away time while accomplishing something unique and useful. From simple placemats and napkins that run up quickly on a sewing machine to detailed hand-stitched tapestries that take months to complete, working with needle and thread touches all our lives. Everyone should know how to sew on a button and stitch a hem! It is surprising how many men enjoy needle arts even though they are traditionally thought of as women's activity. But knitting was once forbidden to women. In Merry Olde England, knitting was a man's career before the industrial revolution. I remember football player Rosie Grier bringing a needlepoint project to the Captain Kangaroo show to make the point that anyone can do needlework! And I recently met a man in the cross stitch aisle looking for floss to work on his fishing hat, which was covered with cross stitch fishing flies. It was a gorgeous project.
