The Wayward Hamster

One thing leads to another, as many of you will recognize. I got a dog last year to keep me company, but found she needed some company of her own. It seemed like a hamster might give Roxy something interesting to watch, so I went to a local pet shop. The store was out of critter boxes and put the hamster in a huge brown grocery sack with the top stapled shut. It took the hamster less than 2 1/2 minutes to chew his way out of the bag on the way home, and he spent the rest of the trip loose in the car. By the time I parked in the driveway, he had taken up residence in the uphostery under the passenger's seat. Thinking I had him outsmarted, I placed the hamster cage on the floor of the car and left the cage door open. In a little while I checked to see if he had made his way to his new home. Yep. The food was half gone, and I could hear him crunching inside the passenger seat. Meanwhile, the temperature was dropping and I had no desire to have my car torn apart after the hamster perished in it. So I kept trying, but he had me outdone. A call to my hamster-breeding daughter provided a new tactic: I took a clean mop bucket out to the car with more food, water and nesting material in the bottom. Using a couple of plastic boxes from around the house, I built a "ladder" to the brim of the bucket and left the whole thing alone for over an hour. Apparently, the first round of food was enough because I could still hear the hamster rustling in the car, presumably busy making his nest for the night. I waited until nearly midnight before going out to warm up the car. I proceeded to get ready for bed, but no way to sleep! At 1:30 I went out in my pj's with a flashlight, and there he was finally in the bottom of the bucket, shivering. Whew! So I put him in the new cage and went to bed. In the morning, he still looked cold even though the house was warm. So I reached in to pick him up and - yuk!- he was soaking wet, along with all the nesting material in the cage. The new water bottle had dripped all night and was now empty. I was sure I'd lost a new pet then, but after 24 hours of recovery he did fine. And I've recovered, too.
