Mom's Shortcake

This is shortcake on a grand scale! Mom always served it as a whole cake to be sliced at the table.

Sift together:
2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Add and beat in:
1/2 cup soft butter
1 egg
2/3 cup light cream or evaporated milk

Bake in an 8" round pan at 450 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes. Cool and split into 2 layers. Place one layer on a large serving plate, cover with a layer of sweetened peaches, strawberries or other berries. Add top layer and another layer of fruit, decorate with whipped cream. Serve immediately.
