Tamale Pie

Here's another family classic dating from the time my mother's poor Irish family lived in the Mexican barrio of downtown Los Angeles during the early part of the 20th century:

Mix:
2 1/2 cups chopped tomatoes or canned stewed tomatoes
1 cup whole kernel corn
Heat and quickly add:
1 1/2 cups yellow corn meal
Mixture will thicken when you add the corn meal; set aside.

Brown: 1 lb hamburger
Add:
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
Cook 20 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally.

Combine 2 mixtures. Add and mix well:
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
1 small can pitted black olives, whole or sliced.

Bake in 2 loaf pans or one large flat baking pat at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve with salad. Keeps very well in the freezer.
