As the decades go by, the world changes dramatically - and in watching children, and some adults, come to their own conclusions about things, it is striking how important a parent's gentle teaching is in giving continuity to the world. How quickly a new generation can lose age-old wisdom and stories if they are not taught. We have experienced the strange results of giving a whole part of our lives in game, broadcasting and technology programming to youngsters without maturity! In a recent special about migrating Gypsies, it was pointed out that this rich culture has not been taught through formal schooling, but passed on from one generation to the other around campfires and in daily living. It has survived nearly intact with much of it's original language, dress and customs for over 1000 years. I'm sure it's not the first group in history to maintain such a long-standing cultural heritage, but in our world when things can change radically from one year to the next, it is hard to realize that such continuity is possible. "If it weren't for my Mom. . ." is more than just a wistful nostalgic expression. It can be the heart of one's being. Thanks, Mom! Happy Mother's Day.
